No quarantine requirements exist for cats
and dogs entering Spain from the United Kingdom. However a
rabies vaccination is required for all pets over three months
old. This must be given not more than 12 months and not less
than 30 days prior to travel. Micro-chipping your pet is
advisable but not essential.
The following documents must be
produced:-
·
An Official Export Health
Certificate issued by the Department of Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and certified by an LVI (a DEFRA approved
Local Veterinary Inspector) not more than five days before
departure. DEFRA will also have information regarding the pet
passport scheme.
·
The official certificate of
rabies vaccination.
·
A declaration that your pet has
been in your possession for the last three months and has not
been imported into Great Britain during the past six months and
that it will not be sold once in Spain.
·
Other vaccination records.
The full requirements can be obtained from your local DEFRA
office. They can also supply a specimen copy of the health
certificate showing all the veterinary requirements.
International pet travel by air requires the use of an IATA
(International Air Transport Association) approved kennel that
will guarantee sufficient, and safe room for your pet. Travel by
sea, rail or road can be undertaken by checking with carriers in
advance.
Note only certain airlines and cross channel companies will
allow animals to travel.
If you are considering returning to the UK with your pets, then
a pet passport is the answer and should be obtained beforehand.
